Burt Malkiel On Wealthfront’s Promise

Today I am excited to announce the first significant improvements to Wealthfront’s investment service since I joined the company as chief investment officer. These improvements help minimize taxes and increase returns without exposing clients to more risk. I’ll detail the changes below, but I also wanted to tell you why I joined the company and what my first three months have been like. My mission, through my books, op-ed pieces and speeches, has been to help make it easier for average investors – the little guys — to win in the markets. I was a member of the board of directors of Vanguard, the leader in low-cost index investing, for 28 years. I still serve on Vanguard’s international board, where […]

Wealthfront’s New Investment Mix

At Wealthfront, we’re always looking for ways to increase our clients’ net-of-fees, after-tax returns without exposing them to more risk.  We’re excited to announce two major enhancements to our investment management service, driven by Chief Investment Officer Burt Malkiel: Differentiated Asset Location: We now offer different asset allocations for taxable and retirement accounts. Tax-efficient asset classes are weighted more in taxable accounts to minimize your taxes. Improved Bond Diversification: We’ve added five new income-producing asset classes to help increase returns (for the same level of risk). We estimate these changes will increase our clients’ annual net-of-fees, after-tax return by an average of 0.5% per year. Assuming you invest $100,000 over 20 years, the changes could add approximately $28,000 to your […]

Happy Anniversary, Wealthfront

This week marks the first anniversary of the launch of Wealthfront’s software-based financial advisor. We have come a long way in the past year toward our audacious goal to democratize access to high quality financial advice. The speed and the distance we’ve traveled are due to the tremendous support of our clients and the incredible contributions of our Wealthfront team. Thank you! It’s always fun to take a moment and reflect on where you’ve come from and where you are going when you’ve reached a milestone.  On Dec. 1, 2011, we launched a low-cost service to create and manage diversified portfolios, using a well-established concept in finance called Modern Portfolio Theory. Our approach got a huge endorsement this year, when […]

Manage Your Tech Career

It may sound strange for the CEO of an investment management firm to say this, but managing your career well is much more important than managing your investments well. Good investment management – using low-cost ETFs and low-fee advice – can mean higher returns in your investment portfolio. Over time, that might add up a lot of money, maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars on larger portfolios. But the economic rewards that follow from good career decisions in the technology industry are potentially much larger. Today, Wealthfront is launching a Startup Compensation Tool to help our clients with that part of their financial lives: their careers. The Tool offers data on the tech startup job market, including cash compensation and […]

Strategies For Selling Stock Post-IPO

Strategies for Selling Your Stock Post IPO

One of the most important and difficult decisions you’ll make after your company navigates a successful IPO and lockup period is when and how much of your stock to sell. After numerous Wealthfront clients asked the question, Jared Jacobs, one of the engineers here at Wealthfront, created a simulation to help employees at new public companies visualize different approaches to selling some or all of their stock. As far as we know, it’s the first publicly available simulator of its kind. [...]
